Surprise, The Sims 3 will quickly shed its PC exclusivity by occupying not merely one, not two, but all three of the main units and a portable to boot. Publisher Electronic Arts just says The Sims 3 is in the mixer for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS. It’s been covertly churning for a long time too, apparently, since EA says it’s going to be readily available for those four already this fall.
Worried it will not transition perfectly from keyboard-mouse to couch-and-gamepad? Stay suspicious, but EA claims it “tailored each system [version] of The Sims 3 with unique features to match more control, creativity, and connectivity.” (I know, just a little silly with all the alliterative sunshine…and we’re not even to the part where they trot out the shelf-syntax like “rich,” “immersive,” and “seamlessly incorporated.”)

New to the console variations, “Karma Powers” enable you to fiddle more right with your Sims’ well-being, and EA say you can employ these to help your Sim “get lucky,” offer you them an “instant beauty” makeover, or slap them down with an “epic fail.” It sounds such as the powers have flip-sides, too, and EA says with these “may have unanticipated results and karma comes back to bite.” On the lot, it seems like the Wii and DS versions are those to conquer. The PS3 and Xbox 360 ports will reveal the PC version’s solution to share customized content with others. They’ll include a choice to automatically annoy–I mean “notify” Facebook’s friends of the in-game accomplishments. However, it is the Wii and DS which have with the coolest-sounding new content.

As an example, the Wii gets a completely new beach town, with “unique residents, characteristics, professions and lifetime wishes.” You’ll be able to square off with friends in the new “Life Moments” mode (no explanation how it works) to earn rewards. And it appears like EAs added unique “adventure quests” built to flesh out each area and break up stretches of needs-juggling dullness.

The DS version, by comparison, receives a “never before seen” function where players may use the device’s stylus pen to “build their Sims’ homes with tools, draw walls and floors, and customize virtually from décor items, textures, and more.” The Create-a-Sim aspect’s also reportedly been finessed to play to the DS’s strengths, letting you virtually shape your Sims’ attributes and clothing. Although I not really know what this next bit indicates exactly, you’ll be able to “for the first time ever on the Nintendo DS…enjoy complete life simulators.” I’ll just read that as “notably less emasculated” general game play than earlier handheld ports.

Conspicuously absent in the lineup of backed devices? Sony’s PlayStation Portable, whose monthly unit sales will be in the toilet. That’s a shame, considering how well the PSP version of The Sims 2 sold (tepid critical reaction in spite of) in the event it shipped back in December 2005.
